Art is highlighted throughout the weekend of Salute to the Arts events, and is supported throughout the year through net proceeds. See also: Benefitting Organizations. It is the festival's purpose to promote the professional original art available in the community, encouraging art as a viable business and profession; and to assist non-profit arts organizations with promotion and fundraising. Through Sonoma's annual Salute to the Arts, the Sonoma Valley Arts Alliance funds scholarships for high school seniors interesting in pursuing careers in the arts. Original art is created each year to promote Salute to the Arts. Last year's poster art, Dick Cole's "Happy Trails," tied the regional theme of western lore with wine country romance. This year's new art, "CIAO! Sonoma", also by Dick Cole, emphasizes the Italian theme of Salute 2004. Artists have the opportunity to enter the annual Salute to the Arts Visual Art Competition; numerous artists and galleries display their works each year at Salute to the Arts in the Sonoma Plaza.
Festival patrons will have the opportunity to bid on juried artists' entries at The Visual Art Competition Exhibit & Silent Auction in Sonoma Plaza on Friday evening and Saturday (until 1 pm), as well as on Dick Cole's original painting at the Salute to the Arts Live Auction & Dinner on Saturday; to add their own brush strokes to the art-for-all-ages mural created annually during the event; and to browse through exhibits of fine art presented by wine country artists, including Sonoma Valley Arts Alliance board members Claudia Wagar (Vine Art), Thomas Patrick (Red Wolf Studio), and Dick Cole, 2003 & 2004 poster artist. Please see below:
Visual Art Competition The ninth annual art competition is open to artists outside of Sonoma Valley, as well as to local artists. It provides entry into the event which may be otherwise inaccessible to many artists. The competition's primary purposes are to enhance the event's focus on the arts; to support and promote individual artists; to heighten awareness of the arts in Sonoma Valley; to include visual arts in Salute to the Arts events; and to increase the fundraising capacity of Salute to the Arts for participating non-profit organizations. Artists are encouraged to enter an original work of art in one or both categories: Flat work and three dimensional work. The theme is open and does not need to be wine country related. >>> More Info | >>> Winners of the 2004 Salute Visual Art Competition >>> Visual Art Competition Exhibit & Silent Auction Entries which are juried into the competition are displayed and offered at Silent Auction.
Awards are presented for First, Second, and Third Place in Both Categories (Flat Work and Three Dimensional):
First place: $1,000 A total of $3,500 in prize money! Something new this year: The Salute to the Arts Visual Art Competition Silent Auction will be held in Sonoma Plaza, with bidding opening on Friday, July 30 at 5:30 p.m., and closing at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. Salute Patrons will pass through a tent filled with juried art competition entries and bid on works they can’t resist on Friday evening, then shuttle free to the opening night gala at Buena Vista Winery. Bidding will continue in The Plaza on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Salute to the Arts. Those entries that aren’t sold at auction will be then offered at retail prices in Sonoma Plaza for the duration of the weekend. Visual Art Competition Exhibit & Sale in Sonoma Plaza
The Visual Art Competition Exhibit & Sale will continue in Sonoma Plaza for the weekend, when artworks which did not sell at Silent Auction are offered to the public at retail. Artists' and Gallery Exhibitions and Sale at Salute to the Arts in the Sonoma Plaza
Please visit "Art Tasting in Sonoma Plaza" for a list of galleries and artists who will be participating in Sonoma Salute to the Arts this year. Unlike "arts and crafts fairs," Salute to the Arts does not rent "booth" space to artists. Exhibits are individually structured by agreement between the exhibitor and the coordinator.
Exhibits must feature primarily original works. The Sonoma Valley Arts Alliance, the festival's
non-profit sponsor, accepts and juries applications from Sonoma galleries; non-profit visual arts
organizations; Sonoma Valley art studios; and Sonoma Valley based visual arts marketing groups
that represent artists whose artwork constitutes their primary source of income.
As a result, Salute to the Arts' visual art exhibits have garnered a reputation for excellence. That reputation translates to art activity and art sales in Sonoma throughout the year. Download Visual Art Objectives & Guidelines here. Scholarships Through Sonoma's annual Salute to the Arts, the Sonoma Valley Arts Alliance funds scholarships for high school seniors interesting in pursuing careers in the arts. The scholarship fund, established in 1998, provides awards for music, visual art, theater art, and literary students. In 2002 awards for promising culinary and enology/viticulture students were added. Original Art Created for Salute to the Arts Posters Since Salute to the Arts' tenth anniversary, an original painting has been created each year for the Festival by a prominent artist.
This year's arwork, "CIAO Sonoma!" was created by Dick Cole. Posters and Fine Art Prints Each year, high quality posters featuring artworks commissioned especially for that year's Festival are printed to promote the Festival and sell to the public. In 2002, limited edition museum quality fine art Iris Giclée prints were added to the Festival merchandise line. >>> Festival Merchandise Online >>> More info on Iris Giclée prints See Also:
